About Lorin
A native of Los Angeles, Lorin developed an interest in the arts at an early age, first acting on stage and appearing in his first TV commercial at age 12. As a young teen, he attended summer drama camps and a specialized performing-arts-geared public school, where he learned acting, instrumental and vocal music, dance, and the art that would come to play a central role in his work: mime.
After earning his B.A. in Theatre Arts at California State University, Northridge, and a brief apprenticeship as a film editor, Lorin moved to France to study with the legendary master of mime Marcel Marceau at his Paris International School of Mimodrama, and graduated from the conservatory’s three-year program.
Upon returning to Los Angeles, Lorin began his professional acting career. He also began a teaching and coaching career based on innovative applications of mime to other performing and creative arts, including what would become a 12-year association with Walt Disney Feature Animation as a recurring character movement instructor and consultant.
Lorin’s acting work at the time consisted largely of background work in film and television, so when Star Trek: The Experience — a live, themed attraction based on the popular TV franchise — was seeking actors for its Las Vegas production, Lorin auditioned and was offered a role in the opening cast. He remained in the show for a little over two years and then worked as a character performer at the Venetian hotel for a few months before returning to Los Angeles.
Back in Hollywood again, Lorin worked his way into principal on-camera roles in film, TV, and commercials while continuing his live performance, including as a three-year company member of Ziggurat Theatre Ensemble. His work later included motion capture performance and character movement reference for animated films, online content, and TV shows, including children’s favorites Care Bears and Strawberry Shortcake. More recently, Lorin appeared on stage as the mime character Pierrot in LA Opera’s production of La Bohème at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
In 2001, Lorin established his own mime program, Mime Theatre Studio, where today he continues teaching local performers in-studio and students from across the U.S. and around the world online.
In 2008, Lorin was selected by acclaimed American sculptor Charles Ray to be the model for his sculpture Mime (aka Sleeping Mime), which was completed in 2014.
Lorin’s application of mime to a wide variety of arts expanded to include ongoing guest instructor work for Cirque du Soleil’s Las Vegas and touring productions, and led to him becoming a sought-after movement coach and mime coach for major film, TV, and commercial productions.
